Surrender As A Spiritual Tool | Friday Food

Surrender as a spiritual tool during the pandemic has nothing to do with winning or losing.  As a spiritual tool, surrender is about moving toward peace with ourselves, God (however you understand God) and our neighbor.

Surrender as a spiritual toolSurrender

In our world, the word surrender is often associated with giving up or losing.  In the world of spiritual health, surrender means to accept what is.  Byron Katie says that every time you argue with reality you lose.  Surrender means that we stop arguing with reality.  As a spiritual tool,  surrender means that we will not waste our energy on things that are futile.  In our current situation this means we do not waste our time blaming, arguing senseless points, being angry or even feeling helpless.  Not advocating for change or doing what is necessary to change is not necessarily a part of what it means to surrender either.   Sometimes surrender means knowing when to be silent.

Nourishing Surrender

We nourish surrender when we refuse to engage in destructive behavior such as blaming, judging, needless anger and worrying about things for which we have no control.  And speaking of control, that is something to give up if you want to truly surrender.  Nourishing surrender usually requires some silence and a good deal of practicing catching the thoughts that take us out of our surrender.  When we surrender we can more easily access the kingdom of peace, joy and love in our lives and in the world.

Ponder

How would things be different for you if you practiced surrender this week?  Can you catch your thoughts when they start to lead you down the anger, blame and judgement path?  When this happens can you take a moment to breathe some peace, drink and cleanse in joy and to take in some love?  If you need help with that feel free to contact me.  And if you have comments or suggestions feel free to mention them in the comments below.
