John 1:19-22
This is the testimony given by John when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him “Who are You?” He confessed and did not deny it but confessed, “I am not the Messiah.” And they asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the prophet?” He answered, “No.” Then they said to him, “Who are you? Let us have an answer for those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?”
What do you say about yourself?
Who are you?
Who are we gathered in this time and space?
Do we know who we are?
Do we know why we are here?
Have you come to earth to help keep the status quo?
Or are you a voice crying in the wilderness?
What is it that you need to do to prepare the way for God?
Do you keep your heart open for God?
Do you hear the still small voice within?
Do you hear the heavenly choirs among us?
If God is Emmanuel,
God with us,
How do we know it?
How do we show it?
How does our life reflect this presence of the one called Emmanuel?
The world is it curious about this Emmanuel,
This Jesus
This god with us.
The religious of the world are even confused about Jesus.
Political forces call upon his name
And say they are on the side of Jesus.
Is this political witness to be believed?
Are we to believe that religious witness?
Can we believe our own witness of Jesus?
Or are we silent and confused
About who we are and why we are here
And the one called Emmanuel
God with us?
John was clear.
John cam proclaiming the advent
Of a new age,
The presence of Jesus among us.
Advent is a good time to ponder
Who we are
And
Why we are here.
And how do share with others
The one we call Emmanuel,
God with us.
